The Idiot is one of the most famous works of the Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1821-1881). The novel was first published in installments between 1868 and 1869 in the magazine “Russki Vestnik”.
The protagonist Myshkin is an experiment by Dostoyevsky: What happens when an absolutely naive and innocent person, who always wants to see and promote only the best in other people, gets caught up in the entanglements of (St. Petersburg) society? It was not for nothing that Dostoyevsky called the character Prince Myshkin “Prince Christ” in his work notes.
Prince Myshkin enters St. Petersburg society after a five-year stay in a sanatorium. Due to his previous isolation, he has retained childlike behavior, making him an unworldly eccentric in the eyes of others, who at best smile at him. His naivety, openness and honesty are defenseless against the scheming, and his ideal of living philanthropy is met with incomprehension. Myschkin’s attempts to help people, as well as his attempts to free himself from the social and personal entanglements he gets into, are doomed to failure.
